Out of Town Patients – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

How soon can I fly or drive home after surgery?

Unless there is an unseen complication, or underlying condition, most orthopedic surgery patients can return home within 2 weeks after surgery. The duration depends on the surgery and risks. Dr. Patel will release you with a specific set of guidelines and protocols to follow.

What if I have a problem on the way home?

If you have a medical emergency, call 911.

Please contact our office as soon as possible at: 832-500-8135
Email: pateloffice@fondren.com

How do I get to the airport from the hospital or hotel?

We recommend Uber, Lyft or a car service. They will be able to assist with your baggage and most cars offer more room than a taxi. We are happy to help you arrange transportation, just contact our office.

What do I need to know if I’m flying?

If your flight is long, you will need to take the opportunity to walk several times during your flight. Continue to do the foot-pump exercises you are given.

Wear your TED Hose/Stockings on the airplane to help with circulation.

Let the flight attendants know you have just had surgery.

Do I need to return for a check-up?

Ideally, Dr. Patel would like to see you back in his office at 2 weeks, 2 months, 4 months and 1 year after surgery.

However, we understand that may not be possible for some of our out-of-state patients. In those cases, the 2-week appointment will be done with your at-home provider. Dr. Patel would like to see you back in his office 6-8 weeks after surgery, with further follow-ups in your own home area with your own physician.

You will be asked to keep in touch by phone or email if travel is not possible. We are happy to communicate with your at-home physician and physical therapy providers.

Will I need an orthopedic doctor at home after surgery?

Dr. Patel recommends a local orthopedic physician, who can examine you and follow your recovery. We can communicate with your physician, should the need arise. If you do not have a local orthopedic specialist, we can help you find one.

What do I do if there is a complication?

Contact our office immediately. We can help you navigate the issue and will recommend returning to our clinic, or several alternatives. If the complication is severe, please go to your local emergency room and have the physician communicate with Dr. Patel.

Will I get a copy of my post-operative record?

We can provide your complete post-op record for you or your physician. Please contact us through the patient portal online. We will help coordinate your records release and will send your documents through a secure patient portal to protect your information.
